Pick of the Day: Use In-Game Bets to Mitigate Risk

By Scotty P - SPM Staff

This is a strategy we don't get to employ often, because most of the time we don't have access to in-game betting opportunities. Last night because of travel we did, so we saw an opportunity to employ a tactic that has been very effective for us when presented with the opportunity to use it.

Monday's MLB slate was not particularly attractive. Although there were some big sharp line moves, those moves took the odds close to 3 to 1 in some cases and our numbers were just not strong enough -- and we didn't love the starting pitching matchups or trust the favored teams enough based on recent form -- to bite on any of the games.

The Giants at around -209 were the closest pick we had with Anthony DeSclafani on the mound against a Diamondbacks club that has been much better at home than on the road. The numbers just didn't quite add up on that one at over -200, so we decided to wait for an in-game opportunity that would help us minimize our risk and bring that number down.

When the Brewers jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Pittsburgh, their bullpen advantage screamed at us to make the play, so we took Milwaukee in-game and parlayed them with San Francisco at -102. Once the Brewers got into the Pirates' bullpen, it was lights out as Milwaukee rolled to a 6-2 win. The Giants led pretty much all game, but managed to make it interesting before earning the 11-8 extra-innings win.
