Today's Major League Baseball All-Star pick was the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers went off as large favorites across the board against Tampa Bay in Las Vegas at odds ranging between -230 and -248. If you preferred, the run line ranged from -110 to -125.
Los Angeles entered the contest having won five of its previous six contests, covering the run line in four of those wins, to take command in the National League West race. Gavin Stone was the LA starter, and the Dodgers had gone 15-8 in games he had started. After a slow start to the season, Stone caught fire and posted an ERA below 2.00 for both May and June. That number ballooned to 6.92 in July, but he has settled down to compile a 3.92 mark in August by allow just four earned runs over a span of 16.2 innings.
For the season the Dodgers' bullpen has outperformed Tampa Bay's by a comfortable margin, and both teams entered today's contest with somewhat tired pens. LA recently slid hard-throwing Michael Kopech into the closer's role ahead of previous closer Evan Phillips, but both pitchers were unlikely to be available Sunday. Meanwhile, the Rays traded away several of their bullpen pieces at the trade deadline, while closer Pete Fairbanks recently landed on the injured list.
The Dodgers have been playing better baseball, have a stacked lineup that has been enhanced with the addition of Max Muncy and still held the advantabe on the mound. Always shop around for the best number. If you can't stomach the -225, we still considered the run line at -110 as a solid, but not recommended bet. The Dodgers had covered the spread in eight of their previous 11 victories.
